5G technology is the latest mobile communications technology launched in the Kingdom in 2019, known as 5G New Radio or 5G NR. Unlike previous mobile communications technologies, 5G is expected to revolutionize beyond ICT world to reach out to every aspect of life through a variety of industrial, health, educational, transportation and mining applications by providing:
5G services will have a significant impact on improving performance in ICT sector, through use of modern technologies in the Kingdom, such as Internet of Things technologies, which greatly facilitate services of smart cities, digital homes and connected vehicles, and facilitate use of artificial intelligence (AI) and other applications. 5G technologies also offer a variety of services, most notably upgraded mobile broadband services.
It may come to mind that there are similarities between 5G and 6G, but there is no relationship between WiFi 6, the sixth generation of wireless communication technologies (WiFi), which is also known as (IEEE 802.11 ax), and mobile communication technologies such as (5G NR/4G LTE/3G UMTS/2G GSM). (WiFi) technologies such as (IEEE 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac/ad/ax/ay) are used to connect devices wirelessly through a short-range wireless hotspot (Router), while mobile communication networks cover large areas using integrated communication networks and technologies different from (WiFi) technologies.
CST has undertaken many efforts and initiatives to enable the Kingdom to be one of the first countries to adopt 5G technology. CST formed a team to enable 5G in early 2018, in addition to CST specialists and a group of representatives from mobile communications service providers (Saudi Telecommunication Company, Etihad Etisalat (Mobily), Mobile Telecommunication Company Saudi Arabia (Zain), in addition to manufacturers of telecommunications devices: (Ericsson, Nokia, Huawei, Intel, Qualcomm, Cisco) through which the optimal frequency bands were determined to provide fifth-generation services in the Kingdom and issue temporary licenses to enable field trials.
"The team's work resulted in the launch of the first live test of 5G network in the Middle East and Africa region in addition to conducting more than 781 tests throughout the Kingdom, redistribution and offering of frequency bands (2300/2600/3500) MHz to provide 590 MHz services to enable delivery of 5G services in the Kingdom. CST also participated in meetings of International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and 3GPP Standardization Organization (GSO) to ensure that 5G technology supports available frequency bands in the Kingdom.
5G technology is one of the key enablers to achieve CST vision to enable a connected nation for a thriving digital economy; it will contribute to raising internet speeds in the Kingdom and enable the Kingdom to take advantage of IoT opportunities and increase direct and indirect investments in telecommunications sector in addition to improving Kingdom's performance according to international performance indicators.
